ABI Companies successfully coordinated a major crane lift as part of a multi-floor commercial build-out in Downtown Tampa. The operation moved a generator and multiple condensing units to a roof deck located 20 stories above the ground.

Completing the lift required a large crane supported by 220,000 pounds of counterweight—an impressive example of the planning and equipment sometimes required behind the scenes of a commercial construction project.

Moving Essential Equipment 20 Stories

The generator and condensing units were essential components of the building systems serving the project. Because the equipment needed to be installed on the 20th-floor roof deck, conventional material-handling methods were not an option.

A crane provided the lifting capacity and reach needed to move each unit from ground level to its designated rooftop location.

Planning a Complex Downtown Lift

Heavy crane operations require careful preparation and coordination. The construction team must account for the equipment being lifted, the height and reach of the crane, the placement of each component, and the conditions surrounding the work area.

The 220,000 pounds of counterweight provided the stability necessary for the crane to complete the high-elevation lifts. With each component carefully moved into position, the operation supported continued progress on the multi-floor interior build-out.

The Work Behind the Finished Space

Much of what makes a commercial building function is rarely visible once construction is complete. Generators, condensing units, and other mechanical equipment operate behind the scenes, but getting those systems into place can require some of the project’s most substantial planning.

This successful crane operation demonstrates ABI’s ability to coordinate complex construction activities and manage the logistical challenges associated with work in high-rise buildings. From interior finishes to essential rooftop equipment, every part of the project must come together to create a complete and functional commercial space.
