Preserving Ybor City History: ABI’s Work at J.C. Newman

Long before Tampa became known for its waterfront skyline and growing business districts, the cigar industry helped transform it into a thriving city. At the center of that history stands El Reloj, the landmark clock tower factory now operated by J.C. Newman Cigar Company.

In 2003, ABI Companies’ work on the J.C. Newman Clock Tower and Museum historical renovation earned recognition from Associated Builders and Contractors through its Excellence in Construction Awards.

An Ybor City Landmark

Constructed in 1910, El Reloj was once considered the largest and finest cigar factory in the world. The massive brick building stretches more than 300 feet, and its clock tower rises nearly 115 feet above the surrounding neighborhood.

At its peak, the factory housed more than 1,200 workers. It became part of the network of cigar factories, homes, shops, and gathering places that shaped Ybor City’s cultural and economic identity.

J.C. Newman Cigar Company moved its operations to the building in 1953. Today, El Reloj is the last operating cigar factory of the approximately 150 that once defined Tampa’s cigar industry.

More Than an Architectural Feature

The factory’s clock tower became a familiar presence in the lives of Ybor City’s cigar workers and their families. Its bell helped mark the rhythm of the workday, calling employees to the factory in the morning and signaling time throughout the surrounding community.

The clock also became connected to a local tradition known as the “Wishing Hour.” During periods when the mechanism was not working, its hands frequently remained at 9:15. Cigar workers began making wishes when they saw the clock at that time, creating a tradition that J.C. Newman continues to recognize.

These stories made the tower more than a recognizable piece of architecture. It became part of Ybor City’s shared history.

Renovating a Place With a Story

Historic renovation requires a different approach from conventional commercial construction. The goal is not simply to make an older building appear new. The work must respect the features that give the property its identity while preparing the space for continued use.

ABI’s work on the clock tower and museum project contributed to the preservation of a place closely connected to Tampa’s development and cigar-making heritage.

El Reloj remains an active cigar factory and an important Tampa landmark. J.C. Newman continues to produce cigars there using traditional methods and antique, hand-operated equipment.
